Newtown - Fletcher Kerr, 66, employee of various state agencies for more than 31 years, died at 2:30 am Wednesday in Culver Hospital in Crawfordsville where he had been a patient for eight weeks. Prior to his retirement April 25, 1968, Kerr had been a field examiner for the Employment Security Division. Previously he had been a field examiner for the Gross Income Tax Division for many years. His employment by the state started in November 1936, and he was given a 30 year recognition certificate two years ago. Earlier in life Kerr had taught school and coached both at Covington and New Richmond High Schools and for many years served as a high school basketball referee. While attending Wingate High School he was a member of the top-ranking basketball team which in 1919 won the national basketball championship in an annual tournament sponsored by the University of Chicago. His team defeated Crawfordsville in the final game. He was a member and elder in the Newtown Presbyterian Church, a member of Richland Lodge F&AM and a life member of the Elks Lodge at Crawfordsville. Mr. Kerr was a graduate of Wingate High School and Wabash College. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was born one mile east of Newtown July 31, 1901, a son of Guy and Isabelle Beatty Kerr. He was married April 2, 1937, to Margaret Mayer. Surviving are the widow; a son, Samuel at home; a daughter, Virginia of New York City; a sister, Mrs. Isabelle Wilson of Conyngham, Pa., and a brother, Sam of Waynetown. Funeral services were conducted at 3 pm Friday at the Newtown Presbyterian Church with Rev. Peter Heemstra officiating. Interment was in Newtown Cemetery.  - typed by Barbara B --

Newtown, Ind. - Fletcher Kerr, 66, of Newtown, died at 2:30 am Wednesday (June 19, 1968) at Culver Hospital in Crawfordsville where he had been a patient for eight weeks. He had been in failing health for the past year. Born in Newtown on July 31, 1901, he was the son of Guy and Isabelle Beatty Kerr. He married Margaret Mayer on April 2, 1937. Mr. Kerr was a graduate of Wingate High and Wabash College at Crawfordsville where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was an elder in the Newtown Presbyterian Church, a member of the Richland Lodge F&AM at Newtown and a life member of the Elks Lodge at Crawfordsville. He taught school in Fountain and Montgomery counties and was a basketball referee for many years for the Indiana High School Athletic Association. At the time of his death he was Field Examiner for the Employment Security Division of the state of Indiana. He is survived by his widow; a son, Samuel, at home; a daughter, Miss Virginia Kerr of New York City, NY; a sister, Mrs. Isabelle Conyngham, and a brother, Sam Kerr of Waynetown. Services will be at 3 pm Friday at the Newtown Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Peter Heemstra officiating. Burial will be in Newtown cemetery. The body is at the Crumley-Williams Funeral Home at Hillsboro where friends may call after 4 pm today. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.  - typed by Barbara B --
